Actually, absolute monarchy was an improvement over feudalism, because the king focused his energy on oppressing the barons, who had less time to oppress their serfs. What do you think the Magna Carta was, a bill of rights? No, of course not, just a means for feudal lords to prevent royal interference with the unfettered exploitations of their fiefs.
