In the Soho Forum debate on "All government support of higher education should be abolished" , I heavily based my argument on the signaling model of education. But if I were a human capital purist, I still would have defended the abolitionist position - albeit less triumphally. Here's how: 1. Prospective college...

I saw the movie Little Pink House in Monterey on Tuesday night. Here's the trailer. I rate movies on a scale of 1 to 10. Anything 7 or over is one I'm glad I saw and would recommend. Little Pink House is a 9. It's the true story of Susette Kelo and her fight to keep her house from being seized by the local governmen...

In your opening statement, you mention that computer science is more useful than other majors but I disagree. I got a B.S. in computer science from one of the top schools, and I’ve been working in the field for over 10 years, and I can’t remember /ever/ using something I learned from school other than binary search and De Morgan’s laws. The former can be learned in a day or two and the latter in a few minutes. My job is visiting other fortune 500 companies and helping their programmers, and I can assure you I’m not alone. There are a very tiny number of computer science PhDs applying advanced concepts in fields like machine learning, but those highly specialized skills should just be taught in a C.S. trade school. All the proofs and algorithms I had to write in school were a total waste of time (other than to signal!). I learned everything I needed to know before entering school (and in fact got a job offer at 18 but declined to stay in college) through self-education and tinkering, and for those that don’t have the inner spark I had, there are coding “boot camps” that have popped up, and I know many who are landing great jobs after just 3-6 month boot camps.

I’m going to have a hard time not feeling conflicted about this one. I’m sympathetic to Bryan’s position, but I really like Ed Glaeser.

Bryan, the next time that you speak to Ed Glaeser, can you try to convince him to take up blogging
